In my last journal, What's going on with DeviantArt, there was a lot of great conversation back and forth and over 400 comments. I read every single one, and my responses started to become repetitive so I stopped.

One of my favorite questions was, "Why do you even want to move Watch out of Notifications? I don't understand why this is so important." So I wanted to address that head on:

Answer: Moar Power. Easier to Use.

The real project here is that we're switching to a Watch that is powered by the same/similar systems Browse is powered by, making it possible to see your Watch as Newest, Undiscovered, Popular, filter by Category, search by keyword, filter by Shop items, Commission items, etc. MUCH MOAR POWERFUL.

Here's the disconnect:

1. The experience of Browse needs improvement, too.

Browse needs functionality that reinforces why we're all here; To engage with the DeviantArt community, grow in our standing, and otherwise facilitate our creative needs together. The Browse environment is capable of much more and we need to invest resources in improving it so that we can do all kinds of powerful stuff, like:

- See First Deviation Posts easily in any Category.
- Help drive each of you towards Deviants that need Feedback, attention, etc.
- Help identify deviants who recently posted a deviation and aren't getting attention.
- Help identify deviants who are posting their First Deviation to DeviantArt, which is a big deal.
- Allow Deviants who post in a category they have never posted in, to connect with other deviants who can welcome them to that category and help them get going.

Once browse is doing these things, imagine how powerful those functions would be for your Watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. The Watch beta didn't take advantage of the Browse back-end before we went to beta.

There's more work here to demonstrate the power of Watch when powered by Browse/Search instead of Notifications. Literally, we didn't expose those features on the interface of New Watch Beta. We exposed basic functionality for this environment.

What DeviantArt needs to do is shut the heck up, go back and produce a Watch that seriously takes advantage of the Search backend, and then relaunch the Beta so you guys see why we're doing all this stuff. After that, we'll talk again.

Please support us by reading updates like this one, and giving us your feedback and letting us know if you think we're getting it.

Cheers,
-- Spyed

p.s. My spyed account still has value in discussing issues like this. My angelo account continues to be where I put all of my real attention, my art, my points of view on life. But I think keeping spyed for official company stuff is still the right way. I'm definitely having some sort of DeviantArt identity crisis.. LOL

Please stop giving the community more bullshit and just give us what we want. What we want is so loud and clear, yet you continue to give us detrimental changes that we never asked for. The community, which I have been part of for years, used to be so much fun, and a place where I would gladly throw my money at to get myself a premium or "core membership." At the moment I refuse to pay money to support this new DA. Now artists get almost no recognition with the new set up, and there's already such an issue around that so why go do more things that will upset the community? DeviantArt's success is essentially decided by the community, so make your community happy already and revert back to how DA used to be.

Sometimes what some people want isn't possible for either coding reasons or simply price. Some features that are coded into a website are not as efficient as time goes on and the main inter webs change and bring in more trouble then needed. And the mods then need to spend money to fix what doesn't work. Yes, some features are changing and they may not be what everyone wants but, people have to realize the time, effort, and money that goes into maintaining a website. Sometimes things have to change so the site can continue. It takes a lot more than simply typing in a few codes. Not to mention maintaining the domain itself as well as the actual site.

I agree that some things may need to take some getting used to but the mods are trying to help in the best way that they can.

It's understandable why everyone can't have what they want. That's life. The reason why most of us are so upset with DA is because it was simply better before the change. I understand things need to be tweaked along the way, in order to fix bugs, keep up with the internet, and all the other nitty gritty details. However, that does not mean DA had to make the changes they did, if you have paid close attention to DA, it's obvious that the changes made were unnecessary, and detrimental.

Listen, I'm not complaining about ads or anything like that, I'm not naïve, I know the websites run on money. I'm not complaining about the inflated price for a core membership compared to the price it used to be. I'm talking about the 98% of deviantart who are small artists, who now get no exposure on this site. I'm talking about the change deviantart undertook when it went from a tight community, to a loosely tied knot, that focuses solely on the big artists. Let's face it, DA is struggling because of the change they made, and the change they made is something they could take back, but instead they push it further, trying to turn DA into a kind of cheap tumblr by getting rid of our notifications and moving them into a feed.

In the end, I think it's important you read this europeans.deviantart.com/journ… because DA is going downhill, and this journal displays that properly. Also, please notice this has about 44K views and 24 favorites, while the one I linked above about DA's issues has 16K views and 128 favorites.

P.S. I think it's a bit harsh to indirectly claim that I don't understand the time, effort, and money that goes into simply maintaining this website, or that I don't understand the basic concept of things changing in order for it to continue, (it's like evolution, and it's pretty simple to grasp.) I would view this more as a general disagreement.

I really wish that all members with active accounts could use the 'advanced critique' option. I can't afford to subscribe right now, but I'd like to. My only real problem with the new deviantart is that only people who are paying for subscription can use the 'ask for advanced critique' option on their deviations. It's a real pain, especially when the subscription runs out and then the critique thing isn't there anymore. It doesn't bother me too much though, since I can still give critiques as regular comments. Still, this is something I wish you could look into.

As long as I can still view my Watch messages in a similar format as they are to now, that's great I won't complain.  However if you force me to view my messages in the watch feed I just...I just hope I will somehow be able to find some sort of mod that can let me view them in peace.

Why? Because organization. Being able to see everything new in the various categories at once.  I can quickly and efficiently browse through my watch messages and delete or look at what I wish, or even more importantly save what I wish to keep tabs on and quickly and easily see it again later.  The watch feed serves no purpose for me, I honestly dislike all sorts of 'feeds' in all sites because they are messy, hard to find what you have and haven't seen, and horribly unorganized.  They are extremely inefficient and take more time to look through a fraction of what I quickly view in notifications; and forget saving something to look at later.

It's how my mind works, I need things in organized categories and subcategories that I can quickly flick through and see all of what's in it.

So please, don't make the mistake of thinking you're improving something with added search terms if the plan is to gut the watch system and smush it all into the watch feed.

I support this!!! Personally, I take lots of consideration when it comes to who I watch, and once I watch the artist I want to see everything new that comes from them. Feed formats are horrible for me, who wants to see everything, because it takes so much time scrolling to finally get through it all. Don't change the format just because everyone else is in feed format. DA is not like normal social networking because it is more organized, and there is no need to change that! And in the end, DA shouldn't take the feed format because it is not like your normal social networking, it's a site for artists to post art, not to talk about what you eat for lunch, it's not twitter or tumblr.

DA already has a huge issue with smaller artists not being seen, and the feed format would just make it so much worse. Stop trying to give us new features that we don't want. DA please listen to your community, because in the end we determine the success or failure of this site.

This sounds great and I'm sure it is a hell of work-load to be done until it is ready for final release.
Please don't let the DArama bring you down. This is a community of creatives and artist, naturally they are all very sensitive creatures with a heavy tendency to go "Diva-licious".

And I'm rather sure that most people who are still happy/satisfied with DA don't feel the need to go rampage on your comment section. Therefore you must be overwhelmed by negative and melodramatic feedback. If it is any comforting for you this kind of behavior seems to be common in all shades of human groups whenever they've formed a social cluster. As soon as there are changes from the old we start to act like a startled beehive, swarming and rustling often causing a major stampede.
Bump Humans are mammals - so are Lemmings. Wink/Razz

I have been on DA-downtime for a while now, and came back recently after the much loathed cataclysm overthrow and can say DeviantArt is still DeviantArt so much has'nt changed at all. (And I'm the one whose even freakin' out if I have to adapt to the next generation of an office-software or whatsknot.)

The concept your after sounds realy great - Keep on going there.0
Take your time, be patient with us Divas/Artists and don't loose your love, fun and passion.

Cause DeviantArt is + will be a place Heart  to love, a home deviantART Groups  for a super-creative crowd Community; what deviantART is all about!  of all trades. And I trust in you and the whole staff-team, that it won't ever become a 2nd Facebock or whatever and that change will not only "take away" what was known but also bring in the New , which will rock, too. #1

Just one thing! Police  Please do not change (in terms of delete) the familiar emoticons Don't mess! , cause they are the most epic smileys on the whole world. I totally miss them on each and any other site/app... . These little fellows are the best. They are unique and they offer such a rich palette to express feelings, emotions ... everything...

What is much more easy than clicking a category and see the notifications? Scrolling though a thousands of pages? I don't think so. And as you see by the number of questions (so much you stopped answering), people see no sense in that as well.

Seeing as I'm going to have to use Watch soon whether I want to or not, I have tried playing with the settings to see if I can filter he important things I want to see from those artists that I watch.  Unfortunately, all I am getting are lists of people who DA suggests I should watch - one person (who I stopped watching some time ago due to their questionable/offensive art) has appeared twice.  I thought once you deleted someone from this list, they didn't appear again.

Also, seeing 5 potential artists to watch is one thing but as fast as I clear them, another list pops up.  Even when I have managed to clear them completely, as soon as I next visit this page, it starts again.

Is there any way to stop having my watch list filled with suggestions of artists I might like?  Or have it limited to 5 per day?  It's becoming ridiculous and I worry it will mean that notifications about those who I do already watch will be lost or hidden under the deluge.

To be honest, after reading your journal, I still don't understand WHY this has to happen.  I can see how the watch would be good for highlighting artists who need feedback and introducing members to other artists, but I don't want this to be at the expense of those I currently watch.  Will it be possible to apply a filter so I can reduce the amount of information I am bombarded with at once?

I left for the better part of a year due to the complete dissatisfaction of the direction the site had taken, the primary goal of DA is to attract new members, I suppose that is the desire of any site and am not real surprised.

In order to improve my experience I left all of the groups I was watching to avoid bombardment and endless scrolling, and of course the drama became so out of control that the DA became "Drama Always"

I see now that several of the early complaints have been addressed, as a matter of fact all of those that complained about the "too much" should now be happy because now it all has been condensed into "to little"

For those of you that still feel that their issues are not being addressed, understand this - the site is trying to become as fully automated as possible due to the cost factor, the rebranding was a monumental failure from the point of view of the veteran artists that followed a specific genre.

I find the only fact I can relay at this point regarding the site would be - When you cater to those few that render an opinion you alienate those that would ordinarily prefer to utilize the site specifically for an experience that that would actually enhance them, if you are aware of a site called protopage you could learn more from it than all of the input you will ever receive from any other source, complete choice of what the user wants to see.

Think of it like this and do not regard it as negative, purely constructive...

If a user does not want to see a particular genre and those could actually be filtered out completely then the users experience would be specific to what they actually are interested in, I have had numerous discussions with veteran users and asked them where they are spending there time now that they are no longer active on DA, they all have went to genre specific sites due to the experience they are looking for.

You should have thought this one through in deeper detail, a rebranding is a generic Band-Aid approach to re-boot a product and attract new members, kudos to the attempt. however rebranding in and of itself is a sales pitch and a methodology that has been abandoned as it really is no longer effective in the cost / result - paradigm

You have utilized a filter system that is outdated from the point of view of this century, because it is after the fact, when one opens up DA one has to "Filter Down" to the preferred experience.

The 21st Century method is to "Filter Up" the user needs the ability to control from the start that which they do not want to see, so the next time they open the site and regardless of what module they enter they will not see what has been pre-filtered out, then the experience will be specific to the interests of the user, the program could be created so that you could merely check the boxes of your interests and have a switch for personal filter on, and then when you want an off switch if you wish to see DA in it's entirety, and for those that would say an artist needs diversity and should never limit themselves to the exposure and view everything, my comment would be, there is always certain genres that you just do not care about.

If the user opens "Browse" and everything that they want to see is there and everything they do not want to see is hidden, then the experience is unique to the individual, instead of spending six clicks to get there.

One item that I fail to see ever being addressed, in order to improve the sites credibility any nude or sexual related material should be limited to "Paid Members" this should have been since day one, it easy to lie about your age and that being the only safeguard is simply not enough, I realize that a user could still lie about age and become a paid member, however the numbers would be radically diminished.

Regarding the new "Watch" the filter system does not work, the check boxes in the "Help Improve this feature" are greyed-out and not functional, you are trying to utilize this feature as a tracking mechanism to implement future changes, think of the future more to the point that the reason many of the serious veteran artist left, too much information that did not interest them, as for future members, they would benefit from pre-filtering out what they do not want to see and therefore also more attractive.

I will check out the site from time to time, I went from a daily logon to a monthly view without logon, I wish you the best....

I feel like I'm being cheated out of my money (as you do too) My groups still have a way to go before they lose they're super group status but I won't renew their subs. Greetings. I'm a little undecided about this newest update to the Watch and Notifications. It is rather nice to see an update to it. But, there is almost always a but, It honestly seems to have a feel of social media. And I honestly liked have the capability of being able to delete, or " x " out, the deviations I have already seen, or scrolled through. It helps me with being able to filter what I have and haven't seen.

If there had been a possible notification or journal that had been sent out to all deviants about this update, it may have been easier to have a quicker understanding of it. I honestly can't remember if I had seen one or not. If there had been one, I may have been hasty on deleting it.

Another thing, I have occasionally seen my watch in the notifications since this update. And other times I don't. I'm not sure if this is a glitch or not.

Perhaps this is a good idea to upgrade Deviant Art in such a way. I'm not sure. Although, we all learn from trial and error. So I am, in a way, open to this. Even though I'm not particularly fond of this update.

I've always enjoyed seeing the watch items in the order of what is newest. I have no interest in the popularity level of the artists I watch compared to others, I'd like to see all of their stuff just the same. I don't understand how " undiscovered " applies to people I already watch. I mean, how can someone in your own watch list be undiscovered by you?

I understand the need for improved browsing, but the explanation of how the new watch will be, it's almost sounds like we are being asked to go back and re-sort through all the things we already faved and watched using the same process that we used to find them in the first place.

To be honest, I just feel this change is not going to do much good if not done the right way; rather, it would probably just make things a heck of a lot worse. Compared to the way watches are (by that, I mean in the notifications), I find it so much easier because actualy keeps it there until you hit the little 'x' button and ta-da, no longer there.

Unless this different area has a similar process to what the notification center has (i.e., the little 'x' box like I just explained), it is only going to make users need to do an extra 'song and dance routine' to get through the deviations of their watches. Having to jump through another hoop, if you will.

I am not opposed to this idea, as an 'underdog artist' myself I love the idea of all those who aren't the 'top bananas' of the food chain to have a chance to be noticed by other members of the dA community. However, I feel that unless there is a possible way that the watches can be done the similar way like they are in the notifications, it really won't be useful.

PLEASE ANGELO---I usually stay on topic BUT.....This time I'm off topic but this is IMPORTANT---I STILL (since OCTOBER) cannot invite anyone to my groups through the formal invitation widget. I've paid for three super groups and enough points to updrade at least 5 others. I really want the features I've paid for in purchasing a Super Group.

I'm not getting any reasonable feedback anywhere for this situation.

My groups are :iconworld-of-wildlife: :iconbirds-and-blooms: and :iconnature-showcase:

On a side note--this invitation issue is only one issue I'm experiencing with these groups--it's just that it's the largest.

Please don't.

What actually needs to get changed is the dumb feature where if i search something, EVERYTHING, from someone's username to just being mentioned in a journal, pops up.
That is a ridiculously backwards and unhelpful feature.

It would also be rad if, when we blocked someone, we can't see their art anymore.
