TLDR; The entirety of DA was physically moved from one place to another over the past 3 weeks. WHA??! Insanity. Here's a video of us shutting down the old colocation facility and feeling pretty good about it.

LONG VERSION; On August 26, 2015, Chris Bolt (chris)  and I went to downtown LA where DeviantArt was hosted to dismantle the last of the colocation facility we inhabited for 13 years. DeviantArt has completed its transition to AWS after a long, long process that has taken chris and his team probably the better part of this year to complete. THANKS PAUL! banks, and JESSICA! petralfireIt's amazing to me how insanely complicated such a transition is, and how little the site was affected by it. We did have a glitch or two, here or there, especially the past 3 weeks, so if you experienced such a thing it was due to this wide scale transition. But on the whole? So smooth.

This is of course due to the brilliance of my brother from another mother, chris Bolt, Co-Founder of DA, our Chief Architect, and the name sake of The Bolt Award (highest honor given to a team member at DA!). He's perhaps the most important single piece in the proverbial puzzle. Truly the backbone of DA. And so quiet about it, too. You've probably never seen a video of him, this might be the first time. Every single person on Team DeviantArt feels the same about chris Bolt, he's the most lovable person there is. Perhaps on Earth, even. He's just that amazing.

In the spirit of how things got started, we decided to dismantle the colocation facility together (yesterday) like the old days when we were first building DeviantArt and he and I worked tirelessly on this part of DA for many, many long days and nights. This video probably illustrates the bittersweet vibe about it. I went to the conference room there yesterday and drew my last giant smiley face on the whiteboard, it was a ritual I'd always perform as a way of coping. Ironically the whiteboard markers were pretty much spent! Fitting. I could tell you war stories about this place all day, but I don't want to depress anyone. Ask anyone I've told war stories about this to and they'll tell ya, you don't wanna hear it. LOL

Here are some photos from wayyyyy back dealing with this ghastly place:

Anyway, DeviantArt is now fully transitioned to AWS and ... we have no regrets about it. Check out the video for one more day in the history books!

I didn't really know anything about this, but I must be an old fart or a schmuck or both, because this makes me feel a little sentimental. :( Well, off with you guys into the wild blue yonder on wings of gossamer and lots of storage capacity up on those clouds ;)

Hats off to both of you. :)

Gotta say, it was kinda sad to watch that video. A huge amount of work went into that place. Even though it was generally a pain in the ass to be inside the data center, the 'cool-tech' factor certainly made up for it.

There was always a small feeling of amazement, seeing all those hundreds of boxes and thousands of blinking lights, knowing that the entirety of DA existed inside of that network. I'm glad I had the opportunity to help keep those boxes humming and lights blinking for at least a while.

And hey, at least chris doesn't have to worry about waterfalls coming out of the ceiling onto the Cisco router anymore. ;)

I remember visiting google when they first started and their server was just a patched together fire hazard. It's awesome to see where things start, even better to be there, but still nice to see an be apart of the closing of a historical location.

This article was well done. The meaningless PR blah blah blah is useless. People know it's done by master manipulators to get people on board but artists won't fall for that type of stuff. We want the honest truth done by an an actual person who is expressing genuine thoughts and feelings. Whether or not Spyed is actually ran solely by the founder of DA, I have seen many times where the thoughts expressed were genuine.

Every update should be like this.

Well, I am not an expert, but I did help during the installation/move of a server and it is not an easy/pleasant job. It is very exciting, but one feels the pressure also...!

I am happy you posted the video, and that you brought chris into the spotlight. :iconhrtplz: Now, this journal should be shared more around dA!

Your starting to get there, your telling us more and more, be more prompt though like tell us whether or not your changing the skin of DA, though I will say this, I hope with the new location and tech and money you keep getting from both the outside source and us I hope you now have enough to hire more people to handle the problems on your site, as I've mentioned before.

AWS rocks! :)

For those not in the know - all this means is that the DA Servers have moved to Amazon Web Services (Amazon's Cloud Servers) instead of DA having to maintain, monitor and upgrade their own physical hardware and equipment. DA will continue as usual, just hosted on a more flexible and powerful system (AWS also hosts systems like Pinterest and Netflix).

Nice journal and interesting video, showing how DA started out.

I've only been coming here for nearly 3 years now, and have met so many beautiful people that are now my friends - though everything eventually changes. There is always turbulence when changes take place, though as long as everyone believes in the reason that a place like DA exists, there is hope.

The artist within, learns to speak to the world outside.

Peace & Light

Nope. All it means is that the site is now hosted on a different system. Still owned, operated and run by the same people, just no longer on their own servers. All they've done is negate the need for them to buy, maintain, monitor and upgrade their own physical equipment by switching to Amazon's Cloud service (Amazon EC2). Better uptime, more reliable, more flexible, more room for growth/expansion and much, MUCH less hassle. Amazon take care of the physical equipment, DA take care of everything else (including server configuration, site setup, maintenance etc.)

It's a good thing. Much more powerful, and much less of a headache for the DA team :)

I guess you will no more have such kind of problems =)

(as easy as I can make it) the hardware DA used to reside on is gone (and presumably wiped), DA now uses Amazon Web Service to be hosted on, this is a really good thing as data can be replicated across all 11 physical locations that AWS has, an outage for DA would be hard to accomplish, and you get the nearest (usually most fastest) route to DA now.

Welcome to the lives of staff members. The community mostly posts when it is pissed off about something. And the people who agree with a change stay quiet, just like when I post a positive journal like this one.

It's ok, that's life. I don't mind it. The unfortunate part is that it can appear as though "everyone is pissed" and the "everyone" part of that is seldom true.

You would be amazed to see the data behind some of these things. And how the perception that a part of the community has can be so far off base from the overall reality when you consider all of the people.

Thanks for noticing this..

You are totally right - this should shift a bit. We need to reach a critical mass of positive comments, and then the atmosphere will lighten up a bit. Speaking one's own mind is right, but one should look at the bigger picture first.

What you are doing is great :la:- sharing some behind the scenes info works wonders. It is really nice to see the hard work involved in running this place

Some of us do try to address the negative comments, especially since you pointed this out. It is not easy, for somebody who does not like to run into arguments, but we do it, the way we can...
