The DeviantArt Community Turns 14

The DeviantArt Community Turns 14

When you're young, your teenage years can't come soon enough. Thirteen was fun, but with a whole year as a teenager under your belt, you start to get perspective on what it means to grow up. You're not there yet, but the path ahead is clear and inspiring.

At 14, you start taking on responsibilities and testing out maturity, while continuing to reach for the stars and fostering the creativity that's such an integral part of your life.

DeviantArt's 14th birthday marks the ushering in of this new chapter. For the past year, we've gained perspective on where our journey should lead us next, and we couldn't be more thrilled to share it with you and have you with us every step of the way.

We are where art starts

We are where art starts, but that is only the beginning. We are a community for the creative in everyone to develop and heighten their personal sense of taste, but that's not where it ends. We are the movement for the liberation of creative expression.

We believe that art is for everyone, and we're creating the cultural context for how it is created, discovered and shared.

Artists love us because we are an inclusive and supportive community. We help them find their identity through self-expression. We provide the tools, resources and exposure to enable them to become better, more successful artists. We inspire people to create art by feeding their creativity.

The Global Undercurrent of Creativity

We provide endless entertainment and inspiration. This is where you see it first. This is where whatever you're into, no matter how niche, is embraced and expressed by a dedicated community of likeminded creatives. This is where the global undercurrent of creativity feeds the future of popular culture.

There's no other place like DeviantArt. We are an unapologetically addictive experience. Our world is a prolific orgy of originality where creatives enjoy freedom of artistic expression. We are the deviation of creativity that shatters the confines of expectation. We can't help it — it runs through our veins and compels us to nurture it in others. This is DeviantArt.

Questions for the Reader

And now we turn to you for the next step in our journey. Where should we head next? What would you like to see the DeviantArt community accomplish in the future?

DeviantArt's 14th birthday marks the ushering in of a new chapter of our existence as a community. For the past year, we've gained perspective on where our journey should lead us next, and we couldn't be more thrilled to share it with you and have you with us, every step of the way.

i dunno what i would like to see in the future, it excites me being a part of this community although me and my deviantART friends are just a very small part of it.

In the future, I'd like to see DeviantArt take on more of a teaching role - art should be shared and taught, because if it's not - then it'll die. I'd also like to be able to do more with a free account - connect it to other social media outlets, change how it looks, etc.

A lot of people are posting the normal suggestions and I kinda get the feeling that's for the weekly sight update journal.

In the big overall picture? I would like DA to live up to these claims. I would like to see tools and resources for all the various forms of artwork you have categories here for, not just some of them, not just 2D digital artists. I'd like to see Deviantart as a website become more malleable to suit different artist's needs, provide different tools and even possibly different kinds of premium feature packages built around different artist's needs. As it stands DA is still a great site for all artists, but its definitely centered around digital artwork and image sharing. Its tougher for traditional and literary artists to get their work across than it is digital visual mediums. We have to do a bit of translation from traditional "analog" to digital and and literary artists need a different presentation entirely. DA isn't quite conducive to that. I also think there's no support for any kind of performance art. DA has video and that's okay but what about music to, dance and what ever other kinds of performance art I'm forgetting? These are forms of art to, and I don't see why DA couldn't be the platform that takes an unknown artist, and turns them into the next star with a radio hit because their song got the exposure of a Daily Deviation everyone heard it and loved it. There's the potential for that in film and especially in music. Art is bigger than 2D pixels on a screen, show the world that.

I really like your mention of dance here. Dance is such a beautiful art medium, and if they had a section for that it would be incredible. Music is also a good one, and not just recordings, but a section for sheet music too.

Thank you.

Yeah, ya know if this is really "Deviantart" they should show us that by being a platform for as many forms of art as they can handle. Not just 2D art.

These are actually really great suggestions. I've seen people come up with music a lot lately.
3rdeye88 Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Thanks glad you think so. I really wanna stress the different tools for different artists though. I think it'd be great is DA could be adaptive to different artist's needs by offering different tools or different options in premium packages.

Awesome! I can't wait for these things to be added!

Just a suggestion, but how about placing a copy and paste lock on the site? A lot of art theft as been happening in the literature area, and we think that having a copy and paste lock would help stop the theft. Although we know it's not a 100% fool-proof measure of defence, and there are other more complicated means, it is still better than nothing.

Hope you take it into consideration. :)

Oh, now that I'm thinking of it, as added suggestions: how about a search bar for searching artist's usernames? And also as a few others I've seen have mentioned, it would be amazing if you guys enabled us artists to upload videos of our music and 'films'. After all, music and movie-making is also an art, and that would be a big step forward I think. =)

Something I would be elated to see in DeviantArt would be an activity filter for group searches or at least a tag or indicator that articulates how active a group is, or if a group is active at all. So instead of having to search through the groups page to gauge how active a group is, you can immediately know as it is rather annoying finding out you are submitting to dead groups.

Congrats on your 14th birthday, dA! I think that as far as improvements go, we should have better filters and maybe even a settings choice that allows users to blacklist certain things when searching through the site.

I haven't really posted much and there's actually a good bit I don't really care for about deviantART. Sad dummy
But all in all it's a fun website and pretty much the perfect website if you wanna post your art on the internet. Meow :3

My one major complaint about dA, is dA's doctrine of appeasement of scaremongers who obsess over the "thieves".  Although it happens, the benefits of posting your work online outweigh any negatives.  Yes posting your art online is a risk, but it's a good risk.  Life isn't supposed to be risk free.  If there is one thing I would like to see dA do going forward, it's to see you guys stop adding features to the site that appease these often mentally ill fearmongers.  dA's idiotic upload system, for example, is one thing that I would like to see go bye-bye.  The image that you upload should be the version people see just like it is everywhere else, and I believe that is how it used to be on here as well before 2007.  Server-side watermarking should also be removed, as it is a fear-crutch for those who otherwise cannot handle the reality of publishing their work into the world.  I don't think you guys envisioned this site becoming "tiny watermarked image land" when you founded it.  For those selling prints and high-res images, you can have a system where the user uploads an additional high-res version for sale while they upload a public version for display.  I believe that is how Inkbunny does it, but I'm not sure.  But with such a system their needs to be a minimum size standard for such high-res images; 8 megapixels would be a good lower limit.

There needs to be an expectation of maturity from the users of this community.  If someone feels that they need to watermark the hell out of their artwork and only allow someone to see a tiny version of the image (because large versions are scary ) then they just shouldn't be on a site like this no matter how well they can draw.  I would propose that that kind of submission should be a violation of the submission agreement, and thus not be allowed on the site.  There needs to be something added to the TOS, that you acknowledge that posting your art on the internet is a risk, and if you cannot handle that risk then you can not submit art as you are not mature enough to do so.  Furthermore, it needs to be a TOS violation to engage in the kind of scare rioting like what was seen with that HotTopic theft hoax.  If I was running dA, account suspensions and bans would have been handed out for that.  That kind of behavior is not advocacy, it's disorderly conduct; not to mention that it was libel and slander against at least three companies.  I'm tired of seeing fear mongers, who often have serious mental illness issues, spreading their venom and poisoning this site.  This place is supposed to be a fun exploration of culture and creative expression, not a place of terrified mentally ill social manipulators.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the dA community going forward.
