In the deviantWATCH, we would like to switch to Feeds vs. Messages you have to "X" away one by one.

Now, I could use a wide net of input for message center revamp, but really I'd like to start with a narrow view of just deviantWATCH.

The deviantWATCH lives within Messages, which contains within it Feedback, Notices, etc. as well. deviantWATCH messages come in like crazy in your message center once you are watching 20+ people. And of the folks reading my Journal, I know you guys tend to have over 100+ people that you +WATCH.

Help me understand something. Because if we go off and make changes, we're going to have a riot on our hands. And no one needs that kind of sadness in their lives:

Why can't we switch to feeds?

Feeds would effectively index YOUR deviantWATCH in to deviantART's search engine, so your deviantWATCH Deviations would have all of the filters and capabilities of the home page. Categories, Newest, Most Popular 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month, etc. BUT all of this would be narrowed just to your deviantWATCH. You could search, you could have all of the viewing benefits of Browse like SitBack and RSS feeds.

The down side? Or is it the upside? No "X" -- deviantWATCH would simply show you your Watch as a search result feed, it would even tell you how many new items are in your feed, but once you viewed your deviantWATCH the counter would reset to zero. You could always browse your entire Watch history, but you wouldn't be able to push "away" all the deviations you're "done" with. Instead, you'd have to +Favorite them or Sta.sh them or something :)

Ok, go ahead, get the torches out.. and let's chat in the comments :)

I agree wholeheartedly with Krazzulimaii. I interact with a lot of people on a daily basis and i need an easy and fast way to check my hundreds of messages. Without message center i would be completely lost. Please dont get rid of this very convenient and necessary feature.

Alright. While I like the feed, there's an enormous amount of people who prefer the message center. I'll try to give my opinion why.

With a feed, you miss stuff. If you're watching a ton of people, you might miss some of the art from people you truly enjoy, or you might miss an update you are waiting for from a certain person.
With a message center, it's all organized very neatly. Seriously, it's practically impossible to miss anything if you have a message center. Lots of people like going through that and seeing "did so and so release something new?". If they go through their message center and there's nothing, they can safely say that nothing new was submitted by that deviant. With the activity feed system, however, you would have to scroll and scroll, and if you don't scroll all the way down to when you last went on deviantart, you wouldn't know if so and so released this new thing.

I know what you're thinking. "Why can't you just go to their profile?" because it's a pain. If you have a ton of friends, but 5 that you really want to see stuff from, I don't want to have to go through 5 profile pages every day. I just want to see it in the neatly organized message center. I don't want to have to use the search function for everything either. I could forget something, miss something, etc

The message center lets you see what you want, in exactly the order you want to see it. If you care more about journals first, then deviations, you can go look at those and read them, then go back and X out the deviations. Or if site updates are your top priority, the message center ensures that you never miss a single one.

So yeah. Don't get rid of the message center. If you really have too many deviations that you're Xing out, then just adjust your watch settings for those deviants.

I like the current system quite much. I like to watch some pics more than once and leave them in my in box for a while and the 'X' button makes things easier. And I also like to check my watchmessages with my phone and some of art just cant be seen well enough from my phone.

While i do understand your wish to implement newer things on dA, the MC is fine the way it is now. You could make it better without turning it into a newsfeed. So no, just a big "NO" for this change. I don't want this to turn into another FB like site where i'll end up missing important messages.

Or, if you want it so badly, don't force it on people like me who doesn't want/need it, make it optional, just like being a beta tester when you have PM.

Thank you for considering my opinion!

I know I'm not the only one in thinking that y'all have a problem with messing with things ("fixing") that don't need to be messed with ("fixed").

DA has changed so much over time and while some updates and ideas are good, some are just made to make DA seem more "hip" or changed just to change. Places like MySpace were ruined when they kept making little changes and started driving people away. I use DA show show some of my work to possible customers, if DA keeps changing then someone who knew how to look through things a couple years ago has a hard time adjusting now to the change I could lose business.

DA is FINE the way it is. It's not made for us to HAVE to be on 24/7 but there is such a huge amount of people on here I'd be surprised if you really needed us all to be on all the time.

I can honestly say if DA goes through with this and doesn't stop making this site more like a social media site like Twitter (which I can't stand and refuse to make an account) or FaceBook not only will it draw the wrong crowd but it will start driving away the few on here that are professionals and really do USE the site.

See? This man clearly did not read the comments on his earlier message about revamping!
95% of the opinions that I read are totally against these plans and want the MC to stay as it is now!
But... dA just wants to implement their stubborn idea portion by portionm bit by bit to keep the users satisfied and/or to give them the illusion that they are listened to! They want to "feed" all, people! Wether we like it or not, they'll gonna get it!
Paying members have no say in it at all... it's always the receiving end (where the money goes) who will use and abuse their power, no matter the price. And this "feed" thing will for sure cost them dearly in the long run!
I just hope they will wake up before doing something awefully dumb.

Please keep the original messaging system.
I know many people here have their ways of organizing messages, and would rather delete them or keep them as they choose.
I feel that this would make the Message Center system a lot more difficult, and that our Message Center and our main searching system should be kept separate.

It seems stupid to me that I'd have to search to get any messages and that I'd have to go through the whole lot in one go or else lose them all. Just leave it as is. At least now you can choose which messages to go through and answer or leave to come back to later when you have more time. I like many people here on da LIKE to keep in touch with people but don't always have the time to go through all my messages in one go. I like being able to see the deviations of people I watch in a stack how it is now. it makes it very easy to go through and delete or keep what you want. I think it should stay as is, it's convenient that way. Why do you want to change it? Have thousands of people complained about how it is now? If not then why would you want to change something that most are happy with? And if people are sick of having such a bulk of messages then all they have to do is unwatch irrelevant art.

One of the reasons I like dA so much while I hardly get on tumblr and the like is because my messages stay put until I can get to them. Yes, I'm tired of always being behind on dA, but I rather sort through the 3000+ deviations/journals/polls myself than just have them disappear on me. Hence why I haven't just deleted everything.

Please don't change this to a feed site. I love dA, and I've never thought anything would make me leave this site, but this would be a push in that direction. I need to be in control of my messages.

Oh no no no. I like the message center the way it is. Stacks are convenient and I want things to stay there until I can get to them and then be able to truly delete a notification when it's done.

I suppose they would have to expire eventually, actually? Keeping ENTIRE watch history forever sounds prohibitive in terms of database and indexing... plus if what you are saying about "It would be like search but restricted to your watch list" is not just an analogy, I bet many of us are going to hit the search results limit pretty quickly, and we would in fact only be able to look at a small recent portion of our watch histories.

I do use the RSS model for a few things, like when I want to watch just a group's "Featured" folder without devWatching the whole group, I subscribe to the RSS feed for just that one folder in Google Reader. But it's different tools for different purposes. The Message Center may possibly need improvements, but not like this.

It would increase the time I'd have to spend checking my messages. It would increase load times for the message centre. It would increase bandwidth requirements for the message centre.

Importantly, I wouldn't be able to leave certain items in my centre until I could get around to them. Yes, they might always be there in the feed, but I'd have to remember which ones they were, and hunt for them.

There are a lot of legitimate complaints about Facebook's feed system (or feed systems in general), that dA's current system nicely avoids.

What if we view the messages but want to come back through them later? What if we want to delete large chunks of messages at once because we don't want to deal with them that day? What if we like storing certain messages like comments in folders for future reference? It seems that there is almost no one that strongly dislikes the set-up of the center the way it is now.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Nope, sounds terrible, for reasons already stated. I like the message centre as-is -- it works perfectly. It can take me days, weeks, unfortunately sometimes months to get back to something in my message centre. Having it as a search would be uncomfortable and horrible, especially losing the count (no longer able to check how many are in there) and removing them as soon as you see them.

I really would prefer the inbox thing as it is now. It allows you to view and catchup at your own leisure, and makes it hard to lose something or miss something, especially if you've been away. Also, you can see it pre-sorted by artist or group which is very convenient. Also (again)... I don't like the idea of a feed "resetting" it's number after you've veiwed it. And finally, by going to a feed-system like facebook, tumblr, twitter have, D.A would lose something original. So please, do not change.

Please, no. I like having them organized by artist and group. I like being able to save them in my inbox, or go through a particular artist's work when I have time. I don't want a massive collective of everything on a spread out format. I even toggled it off on my homepage options. If it comes to that, what I will likely do is unwatch everyone and just bookmark important people's profiles--endless scrolling just does NOT benefit me at all.

"but once you viewed your deviantWATCH the counter would reset to zero."

Yea, this is why this idea is not for me.

I don't get feed-like message systems, it defeats the point of watching at all. I get that manual deleting messages is too much work, but to be honest I don't see how changing to a feed-type system qualifies as a meaningful solution any more than simply removing the watch system altogether.

Come to think of it, if there was a widget that simply displayed random art by artists you are watching, that would actually be better than a feed in some ways.

I would strongly prefer *not* to change the deviantWATCH into a feed system. When I choose to watch an artist, it's because I want to see ALL of the art they create. Even if there is a lot to catch up on after being away, I think that it is definitely worth the minutes that it takes in order to see all of the pieces that other deviants have spent hours working on.

More importantly, if the deviantWATCH becomes sorted by popularity, it will become even more difficult for new and lesser known artists to be found and appreciated if the people who choose to watch them don't even see all of their art. And that would be a shame indeed.

Please, keep things the way it is.
