This is really exciting! Are you guys going to update us on your timeline like you used to? It's really nice to know where the site is going, even if it's little updates. Beats radio silence :)

Hope you're enjoying Tel-Aviv's weather :)

I do hope Wix decides to have all their updates to the site viewable by the public like deviantart used too.

what it needs to become.
                                   what it needs to become.
Hmmm? Really?

What does it need to become?

Why was another party needed to help make dA what it needs to become? Why after 16 years is dA not already what it needs to become? Why wasn't it dA that bought Wix, eh? When I joined ten years ago I understood the deviant in deviantART to mean that things were done differently here; dA was built (coded) from scratch...but that mentality is all gone now, isn't it?

Could it be that the vast majority of decisions made were $$$centric and not :community:centric? Could it be that the flow of money dwindled to near nothing when people discovered sites that actually gave a damn about their users and not just the heft of their wallets?
Certainly the community and the cost of running a site such as dA can be thought of equally, right? They can be balanced, yeah? When users are happy the money is more likely to flow in more and more, yes? Wix, for one, seems to be managing that quite well.

Will you respond to any of this? Better yet, any response to the concerns brought up by OpalMist and others in these comments? Nah, doubt it because that's not your style. Heaven forbid anyone criticize any change because its just trolls or for-the-LOLs? No, its because we give a damn and, ya know, love what dA has/can accomplish for ourselves and the art community as a whole.
But, ABRACADABRA, this is your site and you will do with it what you damn well please, vrai? Not anymore.

Stay devious. ;)

Ya know, I generally don't get involved in conversations like this so much, having been laid off from working here and seeing both sides of the coin from community and company perspective, but something that I have always stood by (especially after the experiences I've had at my current job) is that there hasn't been a time where Angelo hasn't cared about the well-being of the site. Poor decisions have been made, misguided choices, things that happen to businesses that started on an entrepreneurial streak, sure, but that is what it is, and much worse has happened to other sites and companies with much larger margin of error than DA has had.

I look at it this way. The site's now backed by a company with funding that can be used to make the site a better place to be, to help counter the stagnation that's happened. What happens from here, we'll have to see, but there's a lot of potential. Cautious optimism, my friend. It does wonders and it's good for overall health. :)

Caring about the well being of the site and the well being of the community are two different things. The failure to take care of the community, to keep cultivating the atmosphere that began with day one was the biggest mistake of all. From experience working within myself, I do agree on the caring, but just quite a few times that caring was geared more toward the bank account than the site.

Admittedly, you are not one I thought would respond to this.
There is much floating in my head with which I could respond to that, but when I look at the forest instead of the trees, my words would be rather pointless. I'll simply say that I now have renewed hope. :ahoy:

seen that allot and that's why i do not even comment much on staff journals anymore.
But what i would like to know is why it took 16 years or so for the site to be brought out the first journal half smelt like ''we are broke so that's why''
Could be wrong lamo.

You are making the mistake of spamming the admin of dA's journal with a completely off topic hate grudge that has absolutely nothing to do with this journal he posted when I have blocked and reported you several times before. Now you will face the consequences for your hateful grudge.

Stop block evading and ban evading and leave. And stop spreading that link everywhere when you have been told again and again to cease and desist.

More contact support and security would be nice. A lot of bad things are happening on here and that breeds paranoia, stress, and mistrust among the community. If you want a list on what issues I'm referring to, just scroll to ruewitch's comment.
I do remember that at one point a year or so back there was a way to report art thief, but DA has prevented us from using it and has changed it in a way which isn't helpful at all. Also a few more DA meet ups in Las Vegas wouldn't hurt, we've only had one so far and I'm still waiting for the next one. Thanks for your time, RSS~

OpalMist Hi ^^ Nice to meet you. I saw you were talking in the comments to some people about some issues they're having with DA. I didn't want to butt in on their conversation, but it is a subject I find very interesting (and important), so I thought I'd try it with a tag :) I hope you don't mind, if you do of course feel free to ignore me haha. You asked someone what they consider to be some of the 'bigger issues'. Of I'm curious like everyone else I have some opinions about this :D But it made me wonder what you'd consider to be some main issues at the moment?

Thanks for putting me on the spot!

From a more personal, my-own-corner-of-dA-centric perspective, I would like to see the chat system get a bit of love...and the kind it needs, not some ham-fisted, ephemeral effort. I've a few other gripes with things, but they don't really warrant mentioning, here. It could do with a tech update. Also, time was, we used to have a dozen or more moderators/volunteers for the chat and forums. Any time you went in, you'd be just as likely as not to see one or several about. Now, it's a rarity. This being said, Chat is not important in the grand scheme of things. As we are often reminded, chat accounts for a relatively minuscule portion of user traffic and if it got as much as many other sections, the whole thing would come toppling down around our ears. Like I said. Tech upgrade.

Speaking more as to other aspects, I have some particular feelings about some particular events and a particular person responsible and I would gain some degree of satisfaction in telling him where he can insert his entire frozen yoghurt supply.

Apropos, with much of the Help Desk team's capacity reduced, I can understand why DA implimented the click maze to guard the web forms for contacting it, but when it gives someone such as *myself* trouble finding the forms AND isn't comprehensive to boot AND doesn't let you say "Yeah, none of this shit applies, I need a form", maybe you've gone overboard. It might solve the problem of thousands of trivial and time wasting questions, but it also would stop a hell of a lot of people who have a genuine need, and that's a problem. It's no longer a Help Desk, but a Fuck You Desk. I say that with a degree of affection for two or so of the people on it and it's not, ultimately, their fault.

The site general has stagnated a bit. The last big overhaul was something like 7 or so years ago, now, I think. (Disregarding groups, which were actually pretty well-received) That was the introduction of the widgeted profile page system we now enjoy. Now, I like things as they are, there, but that doesn't neccesarily mean that there aren't reasons to upgrade and develop things. I felt an evil pleasure at people's mass protestations and dismay at each new change to how DA looked or functioned. Having lived a number of these changes, I have developed a wary trust in DA's ability to know what's best for the UI and how it looks and functions. Looking from v1 to v...7?...the angle of awesomeness is both steep and steady. I'm only just now noticing some of the mobile interface getting a bit of polish, and it looks nice and clean and responsive.

Now...the DA logo change and, in parallel, the capitalisation change, i.e. deviantART vs DeviantArt. I'm still quite pissy and opinionated about both these things. Newcommers to here mightn't think this is a big deal, and, in a sense, they're right, it's slightly inconsequential. The stylisation of the name and the logo was something many of us could be sentimental about. It was a sentiment of identity and belonging. Then, with a wave of the wang of decision, no longer were we deviantART, but DeviantArt. Also, you know that logo you all love and identify with? Nope. Not yours. Here's some garishly green rune thing that *in no way resembles the old logo* and which, if you can push through the sheer inscrutability, is supposed to say DA when tiled. Oh, and it also scales better. Yay! Yes. I have a rune thingy as my avatar. The mild irony is not lost on me. The name stylisation change I, maybe, on a very good day and on some very good drugs might just might almost forgive. The logo can piss right off, as clever and as fine as it is in and of itself. We had a logo we loved and name we loved and were robbed of both, and no amount of apologist wanking in my direction over how better it all is now will change my view on that.

DA still does merch stuff...but it's through Amazon, as opposed to more in-house, like it used to be. I would like, insomuch as it was, for that to again be the case. I understand that American Apparel is on its way out, and they made the shirts DA sold. Comfy, well-formed, soft as all get out, and good-looking. I'd like for them to not go, but wishes are, at least for now, not horses.

Ultimately, DA functions. I don't think there's really any big, gaping problems that I feel they are obligated to fix, though there is a list of things that they should and a list of things that it would be nice if they did.

There's also a list of other issues that I think deserve remedy, but the site isn't going to explode and, for the most part, these things are old news, anyway. For example, I'm still quite annoyed at the way account deletion was implemented. Oh hey, we have a place where "account hacking" is a big problem. Let's give everyone a tool to instantly and irrevocably shut down accounts. Yeah, it's people's responsibility to secure their accounts, and that's fair enough, but shit happens, and it's nice there's a bit of a time buffer, now so that people actually can have the opportunity to start the account recovery process. Too bad for everyone that lost their accounts, though. A similar thing happened in the chats, too. Hey, let's give everyone in a +Admin privclass the ability to delete the room, even if they aren't the room owner, and not warn anyone in advance. So instead of giving room owners time to adjust the relevant settings, they irresponsibly dumped it on us without warning and several people ended up losing their room to dickishness. DA's response? Something to the tune of "It's your own fault for putting people you shouldn't trust in a +Admin privclass. Give you back your room? Fuck off and stop wasting my time.".

This is not an exhaustive list, but, as to exhaustion, I have typed out all this on my mobile, so I'm getting a little over it.

I hope that satisfies your question.

Wow, that's quite an answer haha. Sorry, I didn't mean to put you on the spot :) I was just curious to know your oppinion on the subject. I'm afraid my reply won't be as long, but I'll do my best to give a proper answer.

Hmm, yes the chat system. To be honest, I use almost every part of DA, except for the chat. I've tried it a few times, but almost always there's already a conversations going on between two or a few people and there's absolutely no interest in involving others, and 80% of the time it's extremely rude and/or immature ^^; So I very quickly lost interest in the chatrooms. But if they were a bit easier to use, I think I might have another go. Right now they look absolutely ancient.

Hahaha, I don't know who you're talking about, but I hope for them their frozen yoghurt supply isn't very big.
Hmm, yes I also noticed that for some reports it's almost (or completely) impossible to find the appropriate form. And this was not for trivial things, but for proper bug reports etc. I hope that with this acquisition they will have more funds to hire some some staff again, because this just isn't working. The fact that people filing DMCA reports have to wait for ages to get óne artwork taken down, even if the same person has hundreds more in their gallery, is just ridiculous. I can understand why they've removed the option for 3rd parties to report art theft, but if an artist reports it themselves it should be processed asap. Even Facebook generally deals with DMCA reports within 48 hours.

I personally don't mind most of the changes either ^^ (except for those dead-ugly thumbs, wich is a problem that they should have seen coming from the very beginning because the beta testers tóld them, and should be quite easy to fix looking at other art sites). My main issue with DA atm is the way these changes have been introduced. They reeeally need one ore two people in the team who know a bit more about how to keep clients happy (because in many ways, DA members ARE clients, especially if they're paying). To change an interface without sending out a notice shortly before it happens (a journal sent a year earlier does not count), or at the very least áfter it's happened doesn't show much respect towards the members (again, a private journal by a staff member that has to be shared between deviants to get some exposure does not count). It's to be expected that you get a lot of angry people, and any manager can tell you that it's not a smart way of running a community based business. If you can send out a push notification for Christmas sales (that you can't even remove from your bloody inbox) you can send out a notification saying "Heads up! Tomorrow we'll be changing some things. Don't freak out, everything still works, this is how you do it". Speaking of stagnation and changes, I DO wish they will do something about that horrible Admin Area, because that's an absolute mess. At the very least admins should be able to search for members. I also think all groups should show stats somewhere so you can see if it's still active, because there are just thousands of dead groups now.

Ahh, the logo. I still miss the old one, but to be honest it doesn't bother me too much. That's probably largely partly due to the fact that I haven't been a member as long as you have :) I don't have as much of a connection with it. But also I think well, it is their company, if they want a different logo then they have all the right to change it, though I would have preferred it if they'd spent the time and money on other things. At first I found it very ugly, but I guess I've gotten used to it. I'll never get used to the 'Core' logo and name though. That star is still ugly, and the word 'Core' still makes me feel like I'm in some kind of bad 90's hiphop group.

There is a response time for reactivating your account right? It's 30 days. They also made a huge mistake with those changes in the group submission limits too (another one of those things they never gave us a 'heads up' about) Somehow the settings got messed up in some groups and people could join as co-founder if they wanted to. A lot of groups got taken over and completely fucked up because of that. I don't think anyone ever got an apology for that.

It functions, but I do feel it's become much less active. For all the talk about DA being a 'community', I think they've gone a bit too far in alienating the very community they're trying to create. I didn't think it'd actually happen, but many people have indeed left or become less active. Many of the people that are left aren't really community oriented. It's not like it used to be, there are more alternatives where you can share your art nowadays, though none of them have the wide variety of features DA has (well drawcrowd does I guess, but the community sense there is absolutely zero).

Thank you for your extensive reply! I found it very interesting.

#devart can take a bit of getting used to, if that's what you mean. We are an established little group, and we like it when things are a particular way. Thus, when new people come in, we can be a bit protective of that status quo. As time goes on and we grow to know what we can expect from that person as a trend, and the person learns and practices the etiquette of the place, we become a bit more tolerant and accepting Without the benefit of present moderators, people take up the torch and pitchforks when people act poorly through either ignorance or ill intent, at least if that person doesn't adopt a conciliatory attitude. People are often ready to forgive a mistake. People are less ready for forgive a mistake compounded by "fuk u faglords fuk u faglords  fuk u faglords fuk u faglords" and so on. Conversation in #devart is a learned skill, but worthwhile.

DA has a lot of experience dealing with copyright takedown stuff, thus I'm confident they aren't just sitting on their hands. They'd be doing the best job they can under the circumstances they can work under. The removal of third-party reporting was also something I heartily agreed with. Like, say I licensed something of mine to someone else. What if then someone came along, saw that person's licensed use of my work and reported it directly? It's not a matter that's between me, the licensee and this other person. It's between me and the licensee. Even if it is an unlicensed use, they can tell ME, not go over my head about it. Get the fuck out of my business, you know?

As to site changes, there are Alpha and Beta testing programs. The staff would preview things, the volunteers might, the alpha testers might, the beta testers might. It's not all done in a vacuum.

Yes, Groups could do with a bit of polish, for sure. The group folder submission limits? Mm. I hit that in at least one of the folders on my group, once. Pain in the arse. There was a group takeover vulnerability? Ungh. Yeah. Sounds par for course if there was no real remedy or apology given. The Groups page is a little bit cluttered.

Yeah, they're absolutely within their rights to have the logo as it is. No argument there. I'll just be sitting over here on my esky...the one with the yoghurt.

I have also got used to the new usersymbols. I think it's a step in the right direction over the old system, which I'm still attached to. Maybe we shouldn't have usersymbols at all. Something that still distinguishes one type of account from another, but not something that appears as if it could be part of the actual username. Just throwing ideas at the wall.

Yeah, a bunch of people I knew have just up and left, driven away. Each for their own reasons, but I get a sense, however much I may be imagining it, that, in general, it was because they felt DA had become a shithole. These were people passionate about it. Enthusiastic to help people in it. I know I feel alienated. DA has a way of using people up.

It does seem a little disingenuous to talk about how awesome the community is. To hear it from staff can, worded poorly, sound even more so. That doesn't mean it isn't true, at least some of the time and in some places. It does make me cringe just a little when Mr I-own-a-helicopter over here is talking about how magical everything is. It comes off as forced and desperate, to me. (He doesn't actually own a helicopter...that I know of.)

I've never really been a huge fan of chatrooms I guess :) I'm socially awkward enough in RL haha. And I don't have the patience to get into the good books of 'established groups' (in RL as much as on the internet). To be perfectly honest, if people don't like me just because I'm new, then I'd rather go somewhere else ^^

Oh yes I'm also definitely for the removal of 3rd party reports, though it can be extremely frustrating sometimes (for example when you run into people trying to sell commissions using art from pixiv or something like that). Also I know that there are testing programs, and that they're not done in a vacuum :) That's not what I mean. I just think that it would take them about an hour to write and send a notification about a site change that will be implemented the next day, and it'd save them a shitload of complaints, not to mention panicking members sending in tickets to the helpdesk, and show a great deal more respect towards the 'community' they praise so much. I think the lack of proper communication is one of the main things that has caused people to feel alienated from the site. I'll definitely be sticking around for as long as I can though :) I owe too much to this site to just pack up and leave.

Haha, that sounds nice ^^ Though maybe not very practical since many artists use the same username around the net. Adding something would make it difficult to find them. I'm rather attached to mine, I use it for anything art related.
