Addressing Journals as Deviations!I wanted to address the controversy surrounding Journals as Deviations so that we're all on the same page.
Regarding:

We collected a list of comments from the release article and some journals and here they are, with my responses for all to see.
First, part of being in a community is being understanding. deviantART Staff faces this daily as we understand member concerns and try our best to serve you.
In situations like the one we face right now with Journals, I ask you to be understanding with us as we battle with difficult circumstances balancing the needs of millions of members.
Any change we make creates frustration, but if we do not make changes then we are killed by change itself.

Need Input for Message Center RevampIn the deviantWATCH, we would like to switch to Feeds vs. Messages you have to "X" away one by one.
Now, I could use a wide net of input for message center revamp, but really I'd like to start with a narrow view of just deviantWATCH.
The deviantWATCH lives within Messages, which contains within it Feedback, Notices, etc. as well. deviantWATCH messages come in like crazy in your message center once you are watching 20+ people. And of the folks reading my Journal, I know you guys tend to have over 100+ people that you +WATCH.
Help me understand something. Because if we go off and make changes, we're going to have a riot on our hands. And no one needs that kind of sadness in their lives:
Why can't we switch to feeds?

Feeds would effectively index YOUR deviantWATCH in to deviantART's search engine, so your deviantWATCH Deviations would have all of the filters and capabilities of the home page. Categories, Newest, Most Popular 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month, etc. BUT a

dArama - ISSUE ONE - Love.

The dynamic between core staff, volunteer staff, and the community can at times be pure quality dArama.

It's worth noting that for years I've worked pretty hard to remain neutral on community politics. Today, I'm going to shatter that concept.

Needless to say, I am extremely politically aware of the inner workings of the deviantART community. I read *a lot* of journals, comments, forums, chat rooms. I have fake accounts. I spy.

But I don't spend my time talking politics, instead I focus internally at deviantART designing technologies and implementing understandings with core staff to address the issues I see pop up.

I'm really tired of only being able to submit one jpg in to a deviation. My art is often an adventure and the art is in the adventure.

deviantART doesn't allow me to publish that.

That's an easy thing to fix, technically. It just has big implications. But I think we should just do it and see what happens.

How?

It would mean that you could publish things made in Stash Writer as deviations. Which breaks the promise that when you click a deviation, all that results is a deviation. It could be an entire publication, like $techgnotic's articles.

We're pussy footing around this change within the company, and today while attempting to publish my art work for the fifth time lately I've just effing had it. I haven't posted to deviantART since the summer because of this.

And my current gallery? It's a sham compared to the work I've been doing the past few years with my art. I just have a hard time publishing it here. It's time for change.

Sta.sh and Sta.sh Writer are close to being clean, strong, independent products. Sta.sh is huge already, set to be a top 500 web property by itself by early next year. If you get wind of what's being released on it next week or the following you'll begin to see it's over-9000 ultra mega power. I already have access to the magic and it's changed the way I look at my creative and publishing process.

So, strap yourself in for a troll rampage until we get this squared away but I'm ready for galleries to contain truly rich media deviations.

Hm. Sounds interesting my friend... one thing that's always bothered me though is people without a subscription get effin nothing compared to those who do. Some of us cannot afford a subscription etc.
What can be done about that?

Ooh, so that is your long-term goal. So until we get there to that capability of blowing people away even more than we already are, we have to deal with *ahemclunky* user interface problems. I remember some "feedback" thing for the "new submit page", sponsored by Stash. The link is here: [link] (And please take note of all the comments down beneath the article.) Apparently, we're not going back to the old way, despite popular opinion.

Just going to the "Submit Art" thing at the top, I don't see the grand vision you have in store...not yet, anyway. That means, unfortunately, I don't see your "over-9000 ultra mega power", but instead a major disadvantage and discouragement (or is that part of your high-friction scheme of filtering quality?).

But my question is, just from flipping through Daily Deviations alone (never mind all the others that can compete with them), how is it possible that things aren't rich enough already?!

Reminds me of Pixiv's stack options and Behance's system to show the project. Would be interesting to see what you are releasing to form an opinion.

This instantly reminded me of Behance and the way they allow you to upload and show multiple images on one long scroll so you can show every aspect of a project instead one piece at a time or bunched into one giant image like we've had to do here up until this point. I'm glad we're going at least somewhere towards that direction.

Now that I've seen the example, I stand by the idea that it should be a third category taking into consideration the 'series' aspect. While you could do something like this in a a gallery folder, you lose the ability to view all images at once along with the text. But at the same time, I like knowing that what I'm getting is a single piece of art or a journal about someone's experiences and those are not the same thing.

Collecting art is an art.

Maybe have 'mini portfolio sets' become deviations? I mean for the portfolio system you display certain collections of art to desired employers... it could simply be the case for deviants.
