I'm excited to let you know that Autodesk, Inc. has made an investment in deviantART and that one of Autodesk's top executives, Samir Hanna, Vice President of the Autodesk Consumer Group, will become an observer on the deviantART Board of Directors.

Autodesk has over 30 years of history in helping designers create amazing things. You may know Autodesk for apps like SketchBook and Pixlr for drawing, illustration, and image editing, or for software like 3ds Max and Maya, which are used by the top film and game studios around the world to create fantastically realistic 3D characters, environments, and effects.  Amazing fact: the last 17 Academy Award winners for Best Visual Effects use Autodesk software. Autodesk is also known for engineering software like AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit, which has been used to design some of the world’s tallest buildings, longest bridges, and most incredible machines.

With the investment we plan to improve deviantART at a faster pace than we could have just under our own steam.  More deviantART delivered deviously -- that's the plan. I can assure you, there will be no change in control over the community or company as a result of this deal but the rest of the terms are staying confidential for now.

Our consistent growth as a community and in raw numbers visiting the site proves how vital dA has become to so many involved in the arts and in the popular culture reflected and created by deviants. It takes more than just extra servers to keep up with this growth. We so deeply appreciate all the support from the community, from staff and from volunteers.  It’s hard work but with a huge result -- for me and for many others the best place to be on the Internet.

It's good to know that !
I'm looking forward to know what it could means and add to the awesome deviantART user experience (or for the staff)!
As I'm using Autocad everyday for my engineering work it's kinda funny to know that also :)

My first reaction, along with others it seems, has been .. Uh-oh.! Angelo's about to sell the island!

Divx is not Autodesk by any means.

We shall just have to see what entails in due course. If Autodesk do take over, screw it up, and change DA beyond recognition and usability, then I guess things can always start over. It'd be a far shorter development curve the second time round at least

That's good.... Now if only Autodesk would lower its prices so some of us poorer folks can purchase their softwares. I had gotten 3D Max as a student but couldn't afford the upgrade price to the latest and newest version. Bummer :( Waaaah!

Ok, nice to know. I'm a little bit surprise that Autodesk has some interest in a community where their software is far from commonly used (I speak about the global community not only the professionals )
But ok they probably have their plan. Clearly I'm just a customer here :p

Just an observation...

Autodesk generally swallows companies, cherry picks the best parts and people, and let the rest wither and die. They are NOT the friend of small companies. (Very much like General Electric a few years back, when they simply bought out all of their competition, assimilated what they wanted and threw the rest out with the bath water.)

Growth is not always a great thing... especially when the growth is a cancer that is going to eat the organism.

I'm glad someone else said this, because I didn't want to be the only one, but what you have stated is true and it does leave me a bit apprehensive of the possible coming changes. They state in the journal here that the company is only an investor and not taking over, but considering the acquisition history of Autodesk, it's hard not to think about the possibility of this changing down the road.

I've been playing with PC's since they first came out, and used to putter and play with Auto-cad and even with the early versions of Maya. I also bought some of the less-expensive drafting cad programs that suited my needs. Then Autodesk went aggressive and started buying up all of the 'little guys', and left you with the option of nothing or Auto-Cad, which costs in the thousands now, I think. (I quit following when it hit 500 bucks for a 'limited' version.)

So having Autodesk involved here worries me. I personally think that Angelo needs to rethink letting them get their meathooks into this site--or they'll turn it into something most of wouldn't recognize, and can't afford.

And Autodesk being an 'investor' means giving up some of the controls somewhere, or soon enough they'll be forcing themselves into some part of the operation in another way, like forcing everyone to use one specific autodesk program in order to post here or something. All in all, I think it's a bad move.

I hear ya. hesitation is usually wise. In that case, I think it's important to focus on a couple of key points.

1. Our existing team remains in full control. AD being an investor does not mean that we have also given up any controls to them. I tried to really put emphasis on this. You are correct that with certain investors this is the case. For example, it is almost always the case with Venture Capital, Private Equity, less so with Growth Equity or Bank Loans. Large corporations tend to invest very differently than other types of investors.

Example: deviantART received a strategic investment from DivX in 2007. Their presence wasn't felt, right?

2. We had many great funding options to help with our goals. We chose Autodesk because it was the most awesome option!

Thanks for the reply.

Just be wary...

(a warning from an old man who has seen entirely too many small companies swallowed up by the corporate monsters. I personally worked for two different medical xray companies that got swallowed up by GE Medical several years ago. They came in promising that all would remain the same for everyone, including the owners--and then, within six months after the contracts were done-deals, they dropped the ax and got rid of the company officers and about half of the engineers. GE couldn't compete with the smaller, leaner companies... so they ate them. I would say to you, 'What is Autodesk's End Game?' ... and know that it is not necessarily what they're telling you it is.)

Working in an industry that has required Autodesk to function and provide services to clients I am excited to see Autodesk come on board. I hope the changes help to elevate deviantART to the next level as an organization as well as a community for artists worldwide. Congrats, dA and Autodesk on your new partnership.
