Earlier today, Wix.com—a leading cloud-based web development platform—announced its acquisition of DeviantArt, and I want you to know how incredibly positive this development is for our community, for the platform, and for all artists who haven’t yet become deviants!

We need to talk about the elephant in the room. You know, the one that’s been sitting on us for the past couple years. Since we’re all about the art, maybe the elephant was made out of origami and it was nice and colorful, but it was huge and tough to work around. For these few years, we've lacked the resources to tackle the issues that mattered most on DeviantArt, to launch the features we really wanted to bring to the community, and to deliver the full power of online presence and branding to artists in the way only DeviantArt has succeeded in doing.

I am excited to say the elephant has left the room.

This is where art starts and where art grows. With the addition of the resources, skill, innovation, and energy of Wix, our community can and will explode even faster than it has in the past, and we will become more inspired, magnetic, and audacious than ever before.

The collective, universal understanding of what DeviantArt is and how it operates won’t be lost. We'll just be able to do it a lot more efficiently, with the resources, staff, and data-driven know-how to best serve each and every member of our community like never before. All of the DeviantArt staff will stay, plus more will join us.  Very soon, you’ll begin to see the kinds of changes we have all talked about and exciting ones you never expected.

The first time we met with Wix, months and months ago, it was just to talk about an advertising deal. I was surprised that the top management of Wix were there, and within a few minutes, they started talking about what a huge influence DeviantArt had been on them and on what they do, how deeply they love and respect our community, and how excited they were to geek about DeviantArt. It became obvious that we had found a real partner—real friends for the mission ahead.

Later this year, DeviantArt will celebrate 17 years on the Internet.

17 years of creation, kindred spirits, and inspiration brought to life by our rich community of art and artists. 17 years skating along the bleeding edge of feature innovation and all the controversy it brings. And whether you're a longtime member or you've found us via search engines or links in artist bios all across the web, there's a magnetic pull that keeps our community vibrant with life.

UPDATE: There's been some confusion around wording used in TechCrunch's reporting of the DeviantArt and Wix story.

Their article includes: "...Wix will open up DeviantArt’s repository of art and creative community to the Wix platform, giving Wix’s users access to that work to use in their own site building."

Please know that the DeviantArt Submission Policy, Terms of Service and Copyright Policy all remain the same.  Deviants continue to own their own works.  In the future, there's a possibility Wix might provide opportunities for you to license your work -- only if you want to -- to more people around the world.  And, there will be opportunities for Wix users to join DeviantArt and make the community stronger.

Earlier today, Wix.com announced its acquisition of DeviantArt, and I want you to know how incredibly positive this development is for our community, for the platform, and for all artists who haven’t yet become deviants!

Hay, Angelo, congrats on the sale.  I go back 16 years when I first met you and even then I saw the dream that was in your eyes.  But I had no idea that the fire in your Greek soul would burn so bright.  Drew.

Yahoo is a husk of its former self. It can't afford to acquire anything. It's been acquired! (And for a relatively small price compared to its value 5 years ago.)

Right? Look what they've done to Tumblr. "Oh don't worry your experience won't change." *puts ads all over feed, makes site unusable unless you have xkit installed, basically makes a giant mess, mobile app is still broken just in new and fun ways* XD

rarely does a company see something and say "that's working perfectly and doesn't need changed.  lets buy it and NOT change stuff!"  they buy because 'just a few changes' will make it better and we can make more money than those deluded founders......"

and they ALWAYS promise to keep every single person and every single feature... until the 90 days or 180 day stock option expires or the 'take-over' guy moves on to the next corporate piece of the puzzle...  and the guy takes over that has to keep the numbers up....

i've been through a few since 1997...  and you wouldn't recognize any of the 'partenered' company's names now, nor find any trace of them around anymore....  and each was a leader in their segment before hand...

find a captive community with active eyeballs to push more and more ads to, make money on ad sales for a few quarters, then move on...  ..

anybody here ever use a Datastorm product called Procomm?  back in the day?  then Quarterdeck products then....  well, then it kinda got lost to history.

or how about... well you get to point, i'm still bound by some Do not disclose agreements

They have infrastructure, they know the modern web, they know how to provide site customization and templates in ways a non-tech person can understand, they know effective interface design, search engine optimization, branding, social integration, mobile app development.

DA may be an art community, but we are what make it an art community: fundamentally, without us DA is a 17 year old technology stack that has undergone far few iterations to keep up with the standards we expect from the modern Internet. It's a website, a backend, a set of features geared toward hosting and sorting images; almost everything Wix does is immensely applicable to making DA relevant again.

DA has been stuck in 2010 and needs a company that knows what people expect from the 2017 Internet and user habits, and from a more business-focused aspect, how to provide features worth having a subscription for. It needs money to survive, and I'm not sure they have done the best job upkeeping a desirable set of features worth having a premium membership for at the cost it is. I don't have any revenue data to back this up, but even from the outside it kind of seems like DA (the company) doesn't know what service it's selling or what that product is even worth, with schizophrenic rebranding and price changes, which again is something Wix has experience with.

I'm not an employee of either, I'm just trying to illustrate that this is one of the most sensical pairings there can be, even if it doesn't seem it on the surface. DA (the company) is technology, and Wix is modern technology. This is all from an ideological point of view, bad decisions can of course be made regardless.

Im VERY sceptical that this whole taking over will do any good, then again thats probably my 6-7 years of being here that makes me say this, since recently all that happened is the site getting significantly worse

As far as I can see, I cannot expect things to improve if I am also against change. I have been here for nearly half of my life, DA has by far been the most important site to me, but I understand that things need to change in order to continue. Whether it is a familiar form or a dramatically different one, I hope it becomes something it needs to become so that some other 14 year old kid might end up finding it important to them, too.

Hah! Your summary is way better than the empty marketing talk above. The part about the "leading cloud-based web development platform" and "to deliver the full power of online presence and branding to artists in the way only DeviantArt has succeeded in doing" made my brain shut down. This is pathetic. Their marketing department needs to go out for a coffee and practice talking to real people. You've been acquired by another company and you got a loyal community of people worrying about the future of the site. The last thing you wanna do is bullshit us.

So kudos to you, Nervene, for bringing some clarity to this issue.

Just remember, there are a lot of factors that go into a public announcement like this, there can be are motivations beyond just dropping an informal update to us as users; every public release impacts the public image of a company, which in turn can affect any current or future investors. There can be a lot on the line, it's not always in the company's best interest for an owner or employee to spill their guts out about how rough things may or may not be, or to list future possibilities that might or might not occur, especially if there has been a transfer of control and a company's fate is ultimately in a different group of peoples' hands.

Do corporate buzzwords really drop a knife through getting a coherent message across, yes, but when you are dealing with exchanges of huge investments it can be better to say less than to say more until the future is more clear, or until you are in a position where you're even allowed to say more. We might get the short end of the communication stick for right now, but it shouldn't be taken too hard as a personal offense.

Your comment was very insightful and actually made me feel quite at ease about all this. Being a dedicated member of this site for 10+ years as well, I was worried at first. I still struggle to justify the cost of paying premium for this site (but do it anyway), so with hope this will change that. Thank you for explaining it how you did.

Why does our chat system still sue flash in 2017 it should be using html5 actuality it should have been using that about 3 years ago....
that's one of the things that bugs me, the other is why no dark theme, TV tropes has one, FA has one discord has one, we don't and thats dumb since dark themes have less eyestrain for many people
