Conclusion of Scaling the Deviants

Thu Jul 28, 2005, 1:24 PM
<style>import ":link:s.deviantart.com/staff/spyed.c…";/*null:null*/ /**/</style>

To conclude Scaling the Deviants and Scaling the Deviants part Deux for those who have read both:

Lets take the XYZ example with suzi9mm in Deux and reapply it to deviantART with Groups in place. For reference it was theorized that time spent (X), frequent popularity of submission (Y) and unique participation (Z) in the current flat community system generally brought to light the deviants who had high levels of (X)(Y)(Z) and often failed to properly recognize deviants lacking in any of those areas.

So if you spend lots of time on deviantART, posting high quality submissions and doing something unique, you will become remarkably well known. It's not as easy as it sounds though:

  • Examples of (X): Many deviants according to our stats spend upwards of 200 pages per visit or more. Some deviants spend over eight hours per day in some way interacting in the community. Every day. These deviants hold a high (X) factor. Another way to qualify is to make concerted strategic efforts to seem very active; posting journals and deviations every single day for a year even if it only takes 10 minutes to do also constitutes a high X factor.

    • Examples of (Y): Great submissions to the site come often from artists like jasinski as an example, but high quality art work is not the requirement to succeed in this system. Popularity of the submission and the cumulative popularity of the deviant matters more.

      • Examples of (Z): Unique participation could be illustrated by deviants like suzi9mm and cweeks as examples. Suzi posts tantalizing journals so regularly that you could conclude she has a deliberate fascination with exciting people. And Chris gives you insight in to the world of celebrity photography that makes reading his journal better and more reliable than reading tabloids in the checkout line at times.

To prove this, I actually asked IT to provide me with a list of the most popular deviants on deviantART at this very moment judged by page views. Lets see a few:

        1. 3,198,292 bleedman receives over 10,000 page views per day on average.

        2. 2,177,699 suzi9mm
        3. 1,916,192 pupukachoo
        4. 1,809,795 briannacherrygarcia
        5. 1,474,909 Kasteo
        6. 1,297,843 poncy-rogue
        7. 1,277,910 larafairie
        8. 1,247,243 kittynn
        9. 1,131,831 teentitans
        10. 1,041,535 kakbarnf

If you look closely at every one of those deviants, you find an interesting trend! Art that is popular. High rate of participation in the community; regular journal posts, regular art submissions. And unique participation!

The most interesting? teentitans receive 6,500 hits per day on average, and they're a club with a listed hierarchy in the most recent journal that appears to always be there.

Groups will be a simple system for users, it will take years for the deviantART society to embrace it properly, but the sooner it launches the sooner that process begins. It'll appear simple as can be at first; much like IRC is generally quite simple. But the impact of the system is much of what has been discussed in the past three journals.

And that is something to look forward to. Estimated implementation time: September.

I'd rather be plain ignored for the rest of my life, art and all, then try to abide by your conceded standards.
Screw popularity.
It doesn't appeal to me.
The only person I should impress and please is myself; I set my own goals.
I dedicate my actions to the purposes of my own choosing.

I like how this is is set up like an advertisement.
It's like, "lose weight in three simple steps"....
But it's how to be popular because we all should be better just all over better because we arent good enough am I right bro.
Speaking of the way this was expressed.....
I could hardly understand! Your drowning your point in empty words or unneeded facts, so people won't entirely understand the point-- that this is basically, to you, a popularity contest, and that you believe it should be to us as well.

And if you must know: The last person I want to be like at ALL is *bleedman.
He ignores his fans and even humors them about their praise towards him.
He ignores potential business-- his fans answer questions on his page for him all the time about his commission details (or other inquiries), but has time to say ...this.
He had time to remind the girl of the name she forgot, but doesn't have enough time to answer commission questions, or even say,"thank you" anywhere once in a while?
I swear, the gall of that man will be the end of us all.
Just to name a few.
/sighs.
Whatever. I could go on and on.

Needless to say, bro, *bleedman is not the best example.

Seems more like a separation of "worthwhile to look at" artists and "few pageviews = not worth your time" artists. Simply viewing a page constitutes nothing at all, rather it just shows your browser loaded the page. Constant submissions? It doesn't constitute better quality, you know. Some people sumbit their art as they can at a slower pace and can be of much better quality, but then again, what dictates quality or talent anyway? Aesthetics are based only on a personal conception of what someone finds attractive and beautiful. And entries? So? It doesn't exactly demand popularity. When you think about it, the system proposed does have some pitfalls that can easily be exploited for people to be able to cheat their way up in "popularity".

Grouping like-art is one thing, but segregating people based on not-so-important page stats is another matter altogether. :/ Most people, if not all, joined dA to show others what they can do and what their minds see and conceptualize, regardless of how many people may see the output or not. As a result, I believe the proposed changes need a little more thought put into them...

Chain letters also get a lot of views per day.
Doesn't mean they're necessarily good. This is highly flawed logic.
Someone can have one good work amid a sea of mediocrity, however if someone gets a lot of exposure for something, positive reinforcement sets in. More exposure is given to people who have already achieved high levels of exposure, consequently it becomes harder for equally talented individuals to gain the same level of exposure, as a small number will always remain in the limelight.

My suggestion to you.... go rent the movie "Dead Poet's Society" and pay close attention to the scene where the teacher (Robin Williams) tells the class to rip out the introduction of thier English text book. This is is what you have become: The Pritchard Scale.

Yikes. If this gets implemented, let me know so I can dump my account. Well, I'll just empty my gallery except for a journal entry telling people to visit me at my new website.

I'm not going to bend over backwards, conform and fall into the anime-crap crowd that gets way too much attention around here.

NOTE: There's some great anime art on DA but a LOT of really sub-par stuff.

Anyway, if this gets implemented, fuck this place.

"Disclaimer The views expressed on this website are mine alone and do not necessarily reflect those of deviantART..."

I just happened to read this shitlog again, and noticed the irony in this...
