deviantART on our Lucky 13As you get older, you may begin to see birthdays as a distinctive point in time. A time for reflection on past successes, past roadblocks, past lessons. I also see it as an opportunity to look forward, set goals, aim ridiculously high. I'm sure everyone's heard people joke about disliking getting older and lamenting another year passing, but not me. Not yet, at least. The wisdom and hard lessons I've had to learn over the years helps me map out my immediate future. I may stumble, sure, but I also have a lifetime of overcoming obstacles and analyzing achievements to guide my decisions. All I can do is keep learning and growing.
I feel much the same way about deviantART.
I don't need to tell you that a web property sticking around for 13 years is a rare thing, and it's not an accomplishment we take lightly. We owe our continued existence to all of you, and the passion and inspiration that emanate so naturally from the community, from the most successful professional to the mo
BOSS Week.I love weeks like this. The team is incredibly hard at work launching deviantART's Premium Content Platform, and simultaneously managing our huge sponsorship of Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego.
^That's me in the middle there, writing this Journal.
^ Check out the intensity of endosage, danlev, hellokirti, Heidi, and Ayame-Kenoshi. Diligent, even intense. That's because they're hours away from a massive release that will reach millions of deviants worldwide. They are right to be this tense. You would be, too.
In everything we do, we aim to change the world for the better. And we aim high. This Premium Content Platform you can read about here has no limits as to what it could achieve for the arts, from my perspectiv
Infatuated With Royce
I took some photos of Royce this afternoon. At 11 weeks old she's really pulling all the heart strings... must be about 15 pounds by now. When she is a full grown English Setter like her big brother Bentley she'll be about 45-55 pounds. Bentley is almost 70 lbs:
I grew up with English Setters. We had 3 when I was a baby and then two of them had a litter of 8 puppies that we gave to friends in Greece where my family lived at the time.
It's Saturday, perfect day for a nice big yawnnnn...
Have a great weekend! From, Royce:
Incredible SOPA ResponseI've been watching the SOPA response on deviantART all day, and needless to say the level of discussion being had about it is at an all new level from what I've ever seen around here the past decade or so.
When you guys rally, it's quite a sight. And I do mean a sight...
These are screenshots just taken from the front page of dA. And with every reload of our NEWEST submissions...
... there is a seemingly endless stream of these DEVIATION CENSORED deviations, just about all of them opposing SOPA and PIPA.
It's always mesmerizing to watch our community in action, especi
Addressing Journals as Deviations!I wanted to address the controversy surrounding Journals as Deviations so that we're all on the same page.
We collected a list of comments from the release article and some journals and here they are, with my responses for all to see.
First, part of being in a community is being understanding. deviantART Staff faces this daily as we understand member concerns and try our best to serve you.
In situations like the one we face right now with Journals, I ask you to be understanding with us as we battle with difficult circumstances balancing the needs of millions of members.
Any change we make creates frustration, but if we do not make changes then we are killed by change itself.
Questions & Answers:
Q: Were people complaining about the old journal system at all? Because I think people were rather happy with it. I know I was. And can't you give people t
Is this a Deviation?I was in Greece visiting my family recently... and after everyone went to sleep, I couldn't. I knew there was a beauty outside that I rarely have a chance to see. And a deep, primal hunger drove my need to be outside to breathe in.
It was pitch dark. I couldn't see anything but the stars and maybe the driveway lights. But my camera can see so much more.
That's the milky way coming just about almost out of that chimney of the little house where I was staying.
Is this a deviation?
Journals: The Tweaks We ALL WantWell, that didn't entirely go as planned.
There are a few issues with the Journal implementation, but there aren't any issues we can't easily fix. And we got so much great feedback, that we now clearly understand some things we didn't before. The best part is, we're going to get the best of both worlds for Journals. All of the benefits of the deviation system for Journals, with all of the resolutions that were vocalized as concerns.
Monday of next week, we're going to release the following changes so that everyone can SMILE!
When you go to publish a Journal, you'll be able to Submit your Journal to your Profile just as you did before the changes. The Journal will go out to your +Watch list, display on your Journal tab and on your Profile Page (if applicable.) There wouldn't be a +Favorite button unless you Submit to The deviantART Journal.
That's right! You'll also be able to publish to
The Iron Throne is DEVIOUS!Update: I met George R.R. Martin at San Diego Comic-Con! - I got to share this Journal with him, and he confirmed how much he loves MarcSimonetti and the art works he makes, not just the throne but generally. I agree. -- Awesome! And Congrats Marc!! (I can't find the photo of he and I, I'll post it soon!)
Update 2: Turns out, MediaBistro had actually beaten me to the punch on this scoop. Legit!
I'm about to share with you some Game of Thrones awesomeness we discovered thanks to my friend Anand Kishore, but ... first: If you were gracious and responded with the kind of passion many of you did to my deviantART v999 Journal -- Then you should know that to be just as gracio

Improved deviantART Integration on TwitterWe're excited to announce that we just implemented enhancements to the way deviantART links display on Twitter, giving you and your artwork more prominence and exposure!
We're always looking for ways to give artists better exposure -- both on deviantART and across the web. Not only do these changes give artists a bigger presence across Twitter by allowing them to reach a bigger audience, but they also encourage proper attribution.

Let The Light In: Daily Deviations:icongood-intention:
'Let The Light In (LTLI) is a new tutorial series from the group Good-Intention that will focus on the hows and whys of committing good deeds around the deviantART community. The first article can be found here: LTLI: Art Features
The second edition of this series will focus on the topic of Daily Deviations, and how you can contribute to the community by suggesting them!
What Is A Daily Deviation?
A Daily Deviation is a one-day feature of artwork from various galleries that is chosen by a Community Volunteer (CV). These are showcased at the bottom of most pages on deviantART, as well as displayed in a chronological archive.
There are many misconceptions regarding Daily Deviations, from users believing they're given away as prizes, or given only to friends and popular users of the community. My aim with this article is to help to shine a light on Daily Deviations, and h
Biweekly feature vol.1Hello everyone, I'm very happy to present the very first of the many
feature journal. I'll be doing this every 2 weeks so this will allow the
feature art work to get a decent amount of views.
The feature journal is where I'll be posting some art works from artist
on DA that you guys suggested that don't have many views or favorites
and that deserve more. For the feature journal I have picked suggestions
for different category to make it more diverse.
Again, thank you allfor posting suggestions in my previous journal, sadly space is limited
so I will not be able to feature all the suggestions.
For the next feature,

Painting, Drawings, etc please post below. Please make sure that they are
legit (not stolen art) and has below 1,000 faves.
without any more delay Lets get started : )
Complaint Challenge Contest!
We got our complaints out in December 2012. Now, 2013 is about doing something productive with them. I am not going to sit and grumble about my pet peeves. Neither should you!
Anyone who knows me should have been suspicious from the start of Phase 1 because complaining is one of my own complaints. (And you saw this trick last year!) That's right. I complain about people complaining. Silly, yes? Well I decided to do something about it with this challenge.
I hope everyone enjoyed sharing their gripes in Phase 1 because it is time for Phase 2! And Phase 2 is open to everyone, even if you didn't participate in Phase 1, or decided to change what complaint you'd like to address!
Complaint Challenge – Phase 2
The challenge in a nutshell: Pick one of your dA complaints and do something proactive about it. Work toward a solution or improvement in a positive way.
Now a few of you are probably thinking things like, "I
Its all a ScamContext
This is another long one, and I apologize but I need to speak my mind. This journal is in response to the "righteously indignant" users making a fuss about me "selling" fanart of copyrighted characters in my recent Adventure Time post. To the person who signed up today just to write a nasty comment on my new Society6 page. To the person who flagged my recent Adventure Time illustration on DA and then proceeded to send me an e-mail about doing it (probably the same person). To the people creating multiple accounts to try and dissuade users from spending their money how they see fit. And to a long list of people who follow everything I do post just to make sure that their negative voice and attitude are the first voices anyone ever sees on all of my work.
It's All A Scam
I'm in an unenviable position. Popular enough to be well known, not popular enough to be making oodles of cash off my stuff. Part of that is my own fault for not really promoting and selling myself,
Seniority Announcements - January 2013
This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many other
Art ElvesI mentioned I was in Mammoth over the holidays, which, besides an annoying sickness for the first few days, was so much fun I don't even know where to start. But I'll get into that in another Journal.
I wanted to share with you a note I found on my desk at hq when I returned. Yanira works here at the office once or twice a week and she had her nephews in with her during the break.
We have a ton of these deviantART coasters laying around HQ so they must have found them. We originally made them for originaldrinkanddraw and I'm so glad they found them! I'm going to have to get more just in case the elves come again!
Look what they left for me!
How cool are these?! Um, please ignore the devious slogan on there... Hopefully the artistic elves knew we were talking about delicious, healthy milk!
All Here For A ReasonI turned onto a shady, well-manicured driveway that, for all intents and purposes, looked harmless enough. Maple trees lined both sides of the street, and a parade of Canadian geese marched across the road to a wide duck pond with a flamboyant fountain. There were blooming crepe myrtles and rose-of-sharons, and as I grew closer to my destination, neatly trimmed gardens with neatly trimmed bushes.
I stopped to let the geese pass. They looked at me; one hissed. I honked my horn and moved around them.
At the end of the road sat a collection of grayish buildings and a number of signs directing me to the appropriate parking lot. "Welcome to Ten Creeks Hospital," said one of them. "Please enjoy your stay." I parked in the visitor's lot. Surely I wouldn't be staying.
I was shaking when I got out of my car. I had spent the morning getting high. One foot in front of the other, flip-flop noises, hot sidewalk. Mulberry and magnolia trees, freshly shaved grass. A bench and pan for smokers. A set o
