portfolios and street photographs

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 29, 2009, 1:05 AM

sweet day today.

a lot of progress on portfolio, bringing solid shape to the design model. next up the interface group will add final touches so we can go in to development. what I can tell you with certainty at this point is that the deviantART Portfolio system you will ultimately use is something each of you who have anticipated this core function of deviantART will take to heart as a true world class solution. the intentions of the customers for this project (including $liquisoft, $makepictures, $mhalpert and others) is not to just make a portfolio, but rather a portfolio standard that can hold its own even with time.

interestingly the result is quite simple, but it turns out that the flavor of simple in this type of project is exactly the key to the best possible result.

next up, we hit the streets

and if you're going to hit the streets to "make some photos" in style, you've gotta do it with squeeks, I mean `cweeks. dudes, seriously, a ninja bow down is entirely appropriate for the next second.

there's a second. :meditate:

whatever you know about street photography.. i want you to geek with me on one particular aspect of it. the art has its own language... and it's the language of the street. it fits right in with knowing how to use your equipment, or identifying interesting subjects. i didn't realize how easy it could be to get the ever loving crap kicked out of you by people who don't appreciate their photo being taken. knowing how to talk to people, knowing when to chuckle or crack a smile can be the difference between using your camera to manipulate light or using it as a heavy object to threaten someone coming after your ass. LOL

and just right there, the addiction got a little more intense.

not that we got our asses kicked or anything.

i just mean, `cweeks gets right in your face man.... if there's beauty in a moment? he's not exactly going to be shy about invading the space of another person to nab it, even if it means shoving a lens in your face as you're trying to squeeze by in a crowded street. the dude is right on top of it.

i used to hunt as a kid... birds mostly... family tradition... don't do it anymore. but this felt just like hunting... just hunting to capture a split second as opposed to a bird. thinking back on it, i'm day dreaming about time slowing down, with this innocent sequence of time being chopped up in to thin slices of moments, while i'm scanning each one to find the right capture. and hating myself for how many moments I missed due to lacking the skill and preparation for the moment.

it makes you want to never be unprepared again, it makes you want to never lack the skill again. i want to practice for days and days and weeks and weeks.

what a trip man...

basic highlights, we hit Hollywood boulevard while the Wolverine movie premiere was taking place at the Manns Chinese Theatre. Security guards were passing out foam wolverine fingers and everyone, their mother and their swine flu sars masks were out to see famous people. super easy subject matter.

we also saw spunge bob square pants hitting on a girl in her late teens early twenties. my snap wasn't good enough to post, I hope Chris shares his.

it was f*cskng exhilarating.

an afternoon with Chris Weeks.

dude. thanks.

Well when I have done street photography I hold my camera on the neck strap at chest hight with a small aperture. I just keep clicking when ever I see something. Kids really are the best subjects, they wear their hearts on their sleeves. Getting irony is good too almost like a fail blog photo but not quite...

I think that it would be easier if thinking burned a bunch of calories.
Then stupid people would be fat

I love the candid aspect of trying to take street photos. I've never been one for posing and setting up shots. The spontaneous is just much more exciting. I have a lomography fish eye lens I like to take out and just randomly shoot with. 7/8s of the roll is trash, but in every roll there's like one or two exceptional shots. I should really post some of those heh.

Sounds like you had fun dude. I can't believe the Swine Flu has reached the level of masks already. I'm thinking about buying some too...living in Tucson, AZ (only 2 hours north of Mexico) makes me a bit paranoid for this one. Here's to staying safe.
