Galactic Jungle by spyed
Galactic Jungle
I produced my first major art project this year for our Burning Man camp, Galactic Jungle. I wanted to share a photo or two and soon tell the story.

Great people came together to achieve this result. It is a project I am very proud of. More soon!

TLDR; The entirety of DA was physically moved from one place to another over the past 3 weeks. WHA??! Insanity. Here's a video of us shutting down the old colocation facility and feeling pretty good about it.

LONG VERSION; On August 26, 2015, Chris Bolt (chris)  and I went to downtown LA where DeviantArt was hosted to dismantle the last of the colocation facility we inhabited for 13 years. DeviantArt has completed its transition to AWS after a long, long process that has taken chris and his team probably the better part of this year to complete. THANKS PAUL! banks, and JESSICA! petralfireIt's amazing to me how insanely complicated such a transition is, and how little the site was affected by it. We did have a glitch or two, here or there, especially the past 3 weeks, so if you experienced such a thing it was due to this wide scale transition. But on the whole? So smooth.

This is of course due to the brilliance of my brother from another mother, chris Bolt, Co-Founder of DA, our Chief Architect, and the name sake of The Bolt Award (highest honor given to a team member at DA!). He's perhaps the most important single piece in the proverbial puzzle. Truly the backbone of DA. And so quiet about it, too. You've probably never seen a video of him, this might be the first time. Every single person on Team DeviantArt feels the same about chris Bolt, he's the most lovable person there is. Perhaps on Earth, even. He's just that amazing.

In the spirit of how things got started, we decided to dismantle the colocation facility together (yesterday) like the old days when we were first building DeviantArt and he and I worked tirelessly on this part of DA for many, many long days and nights. This video probably illustrates the bittersweet vibe about it. I went to the conference room there yesterday and drew my last giant smiley face on the whiteboard, it was a ritual I'd always perform as a way of coping. Ironically the whiteboard markers were pretty much spent! Fitting. I could tell you war stories about this place all day, but I don't want to depress anyone. Ask anyone I've told war stories about this to and they'll tell ya, you don't wanna hear it. LOL

Here are some photos from wayyyyy back dealing with this ghastly place:

Anyway, DeviantArt is now fully transitioned to AWS and ... we have no regrets about it. Check out the video for one more day in the history books!

I have the privilege of making the ultimate day-to-day decisions on deviantART in my acting position as Chief Executive Officer. I Co-Founded deviantART in April of 2000 with jark along with a founding team of individuals including matteo most of whom joined around launch in August. Honorary founding team members include: mccann, chris and spot.

I've had a passion for building online communities since my addiction to game BBS's (doom, doom 2, heretic, hexen, etc.) when I was 12. I co-sysop'd the Netherworld BBS in Northern Virginia at that time (till I was 15) and fell in love with the possibilities; especially as they applied to a global community. deviantART mirrors many aspects of BBS's and as time progresses you will find even closer comparisons to the quality of community MajorBBS and other platforms were able to support. Of course, most of you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say BBS's. Ugh.

I've now spent more than half my life building online communities. Seeking to deliver a mainstream application that captures the depth and passion that I felt for BBS's in my youth youth, rather than my now youth. :D

I'm very proud of the success of deviantART. Especially the fact that we took the road less traveled and arrived a little later, but on our own pure and untainted terms. We're doing it our way.

And that ladies and gentlemen ... feels like a milli-millillion dollars.

Before you read about the future, read about the past. And I think with a past like that and a team like this, it is a bright future indeed.

It is our intention to create the most powerful outlet in the world for known and unknown artists alike.

Most importantly we intend to take our time to do it right. For the first time in history there is connection and communication between artists and fans on a massive scale. deviantART represents a breakthrough for the promotion and exposure of otherwise stranded artists in all corners of the globe. Our job is to make sense of the possibility, and craft it in a responsible manner.

And that's what I'm here to do along with the strong team we've assembled here at deviantART; until the job is done.

(If you have something real and tangible to propose that may help deviantART in one way or another; Feel free to send me a note. I read every note even if I don't respond. Forgive me on the responses, there are thousands of notes!)

Hi Mr. Sotira!

I am a relatively new deviant so you probably have never heard of me, which is okay. I just have a question. It's not urgent so if someone is dying right now, you can completely ignore this comment, but if you have the time can you please answer?

So, I have this business project, and I need to pick an entrepreneur to create a presentation on. If you haven't guessed already, the entrepreneur I chose was you so yeah...

I already have done my research but what's odd enough is that I can't exactly find about your parents. Is that too creepy? Am I going too personal with this? One of the requirements in my assignment is to have some information about your family but I can't exactly find any...

So is it okay with you if you can tell me your parents' and your brothers' and/or your sisters' names if you have any? Or is it too public to share? Maybe you could recommend a more private site that might be available to me?

Well, with that said, sorry to take up your time and thank you for your attention! It's okay if you don't answer but I'll just have to endure without them! :)
