community ideas for deviantART

Provided by the community for consideration by deviantART; Please comment on this collection or note me if you'd like a particular idea to be added to this collection for review!!

Happy Saturday! I'm hanging out at home, so I thought I'd have an open conversation. Post anything, I'll reply. It's about 11:30am, I'll be in front of this thing for two hours before I go to my god daughters 7th birthday party! Yay!

If you're wondering what we're up to, check out the DeviantArt Timeline ( ) -- It might compel you to ask some questions. Or, if there's anything you've been wondering about, ask!

Here's some food for thought to get you started about the overall state of DeviantArt:

Our team focuses on two things that matter most to us, the first is our mission to Entertain, Inspire & Empower the Artist in All of Us. We have tackled this notion to the ground, the root sentiment that's marketable, part of our product, and a direct driving force for our team: We are here to nurture your creative nature.

We take this notion and we use it as a lens to drive forward our goals. Our goals are all based off of growth for core active members. This means people like you, if you're here responding. We have millions and millions of "Spectators" on DeviantArt who lurk and check stuff out, they aren't our focus. Our focus is you. The more members, the healthier DeviantArt is.

This is what fuels the projects that go into the timeline. Each timeline post invites a conversation from the community, we absorb the feedback and we directly function against it. Occasionally we get an incredibly confusing mixed bag of feedback, in those cases we refer to data, and sometimes our own intuition to resolve.

This is DeviantArt, Inc. That's what we do.

We're facing some challenges! Most notably, the world is moving to mobile, yet some of you hate mobile. :) At the same time, it's not a joke. DeviantArt two years ago was 12% mobile, it is now 40% mobile. You could do some rough math and learn that we'll be more than 50% mobile in January of 2016, right around the corner. This means our team is investing heavily in building our android and iOS apps, and soon repositioning our mobile web experiences.

Our rebrand last year allowed us to arrive to Our Story - We did this to help us articulate DeviantArt on smaller screens, bigger screens, new platforms, and beyond. We also did this to help absorb more talent into DeviantArt that may or may not be from the community, but to still allow their unique talents to be applied to DA by understanding who we are more easily. This has been very effective, our User Experience and Product teams have permitted us to function the way that I describe above: Completely transparently on all product builds. It's allowed us to institutionalize listening.

We hope you are feeling these constructive effects, but at the same time we're aware that you're facing issues with the platform (Groups, mobile web, message center, and so on) and we're working on each of those. Feel free to ask about specific stuff.

Anyway, ask any questions I'm here to answer for a few hours today!

update: I'm heading to that event, but I have absolutely loved sharing feedback directly to you all, so please keep the questions coming. I'll get to them another time just don't be upset if it isn't as immediate as it has been the past few hours.

draweverywhere always asks me, "What are you drawing?" - I love this question. He texts it to me or messages me somehow on a pretty regular basis. I love the prompt, the inquiry, the intent.

I'm doodling lately. I've been reduced to doodling. In meetings 24/7 so I just fill up sketchbooks with decreasingly attractive lazy sketches. That's the thing about drawing, everyone can do it. It's just that trying to do it is like lifting a heavy weight, it doesn't just pour out if you don't practice. It takes a lot of your concentration.

If you don't draw, has anyone explicitly told you this? I feel like the little subtle things make all the difference and people all too often tell you to do things like "draw" but they don't give you the little insights that actually make it possible for you to start. For example, if you look at something across the room no matter what it is and begin to sketch it, if you concentrate really hard on how it looks, and try really hard to represent it on paper: YOU WILL. It will be charming. You should do that. And if you keep doing that, eventually you perceive it better. That's the practice. Plus, you can read up on it when you get curious to compound the knowledge.

So, I need to step up my game and stop drawing lazy sketches and actually concentrate. Meanwhile...

What are you drawing?

(pass it on) :)
Humanity, yes.
Tribalism, no.
We are one.

Found this in the wild. You know, it sure does feel good to know we are even inspiring llamas to motivate people to deviate!

I have the privilege of making the ultimate day-to-day decisions on deviantART in my acting position as Chief Executive Officer. I Co-Founded deviantART in April of 2000 with jark along with a founding team of individuals including matteo most of whom joined around launch in August. Honorary founding team members include: mccann, chris and spot.

I've had a passion for building online communities since my addiction to game BBS's (doom, doom 2, heretic, hexen, etc.) when I was 12. I co-sysop'd the Netherworld BBS in Northern Virginia at that time (till I was 15) and fell in love with the possibilities; especially as they applied to a global community. deviantART mirrors many aspects of BBS's and as time progresses you will find even closer comparisons to the quality of community MajorBBS and other platforms were able to support. Of course, most of you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say BBS's. Ugh.

I've now spent more than half my life building online communities. Seeking to deliver a mainstream application that captures the depth and passion that I felt for BBS's in my youth youth, rather than my now youth. :D

I'm very proud of the success of deviantART. Especially the fact that we took the road less traveled and arrived a little later, but on our own pure and untainted terms. We're doing it our way.

And that ladies and gentlemen ... feels like a milli-millillion dollars.

Before you read about the future, read about the past. And I think with a past like that and a team like this, it is a bright future indeed.

It is our intention to create the most powerful outlet in the world for known and unknown artists alike.

Most importantly we intend to take our time to do it right. For the first time in history there is connection and communication between artists and fans on a massive scale. deviantART represents a breakthrough for the promotion and exposure of otherwise stranded artists in all corners of the globe. Our job is to make sense of the possibility, and craft it in a responsible manner.

And that's what I'm here to do along with the strong team we've assembled here at deviantART; until the job is done.

(If you have something real and tangible to propose that may help deviantART in one way or another; Feel free to send me a note. I read every note even if I don't respond. Forgive me on the responses, there are thousands of notes!)

Care to explain why y2jenn, kozispoon and your other former staff members got fired? What's the reason why they lost their job? They haven't done something wrong or horrible things.

I would like to know that as well, i did not mind Y2jenn as they helped me with a ticket i had a while back.

from what i hear there are only 4 people either of staff or who run the help desk.

if DA is not careful then the site will most likely plummet down more.
being on here 6 years or so and seeing the change is something i should of not wished to see.

Me either. Honestly, y2jenn was one of the staff who mostly solved my reports than anyone else who run the Help Desk.

That's not enough. If dA's goal is to reach more members to make the community grow as they stated, then there should be more staff too.

That would be a shame...
If the staff took their job more seriously and listen to their userbase community, this site wouldn't have gone downhill. Well, dA may be their website but there's a lot of members who are helpful and coming up with suggestions that could be useful.

I have had one ex staff member telling me that they where not fired, so i can only assume is that they either decided to leave their job or they where told to.

To be honest i don't think we will ever find out, if ex staff members want to keep it to them self's then it's understandable.
the site has been going down hill any ways for some time, i barely report things on here any more and i don't have any plans really if there are less people at the help desk.

the staff should listen to their user base, but they would most likely say different things and claim its not like that when that is not the case.

with all the new updates pushed out it feels like anther Facebook to be honest.
DA's goal to me is so they can make money , they want to be like other sites hence why with the mobile site that looks nothing like DA.

it's hard to really say how i feel about this site in public, either some other users will claim i am whining or a staff member will tell me that it's not true.
probably why most users have left DA.

the staff seem to focus more on their goal than their user base.

Please read this journal and do something about it. I've been on this site for 6 years and I don't want to see it go to waste. This site is basically my second home, as it is for many others.…

I've read a journal addressing you and the website. We need you. Show responsibility. Do something about the bugs you're told of. Take better care.
